ScarWork Case Study 2 – 75 year old male

Background:

Following a diagnosis of a carcinoma on the duodenum the patient underwent several surgical procedures from 2018 onwards including a Whipple procedure was The patient developed sepsis and was on life support for sepsis, for a number of days. Over the next two years the patient then underwent laparotomy to clear adhesions, a bowel resection, a gastrectomy and feeding jejunostomy. All of these surgical interventions were made through the same initial scar causing repeated trauma.

In March 2020 an abscess developed at the site of the jejunostomy. This was treated with antibiotics and surgically drained resulting in a prolonged healing period.

Treatment consisted of 9 sessions (when allowed between pandemic lockdown restrictions) each 45 mins duration to ease the tethering to underlying tissue, to smooth the scar and reduce tightness. The ScarWork was complimented with myofascial release and massage techniques to help open up the chest and shoulders thus improving posture. Digestion was improved and the scars became  softer, lighter in colour with no residual areas of redness now. There was significantly less dryness overall and overlapping at the scar intersection as well as fibrosis was reduced.

Patient Feedback:

"Sarah has done a marvellous job reducing the prominence and lividity of my scars. This was no mean feat as the two long scars, a lateral one bisected by a vertical one, had been opened up four times. The resulting tightness has also been reduced considerably."
